The first single on Taylor Swift’s just-dropped album,Folklore, contains a line that everyone will identify with at some point in their lives. ‘And I felt like I was an old cardigan / Under someone’s bed / You put me on and said I was your favourite.’ That’s right. Not only has the singer had a seriously productive isolation period, collaborating with fellow musicians and capturing the millennial experience while the rest of us have been baking banana bread, but she’s also been magnanimous enough to give the [cardigan](https://graziadaily.co.uk/fashion/news/best-cardigans-for-women/r-women/) a much-needed new lease of life.
The cardigan in question - a chunky cream cable-knit embroidered with silver stars - is specially made merch for the video and - gasp! - is available to buy, along with the digital standard album, for $49. Swift, who’s famously connected to her following, sent cardigans to several super fans for the album’s launch, including Kobe Bryant’s daughter Natalia.
Now, it seems, we just have to sit back and wait for the stream of photogenic #ootd posts of cardigans. Suki Waterhouse has already worn her merch, captioning the photo: ‘My pal released a new album and I’ll be wearing this cardigan for a straight week to celebrate.’
As the album’s name would suggest, the fashion has a folksy, bohemian flavour. In Cardigan, Swift might sing about a ‘vintage tee’, ‘black lipstick’ and ‘Levi’s’, but the only things she wears are a white nightie that looks like it came from a flea market and the cardigan. It’s a charming combination that chimes with the #cottagecore aesthetic that many have cultivated during lockdown.
On the album cover itself, she wears a denim jacket slung over a lace tea dress in another nod to the trend for fashion with a homespun feel.
When it comes to cardigans, you want to seek out something similarly chunky. & Daughter’s is made from superfine wool cashmere in Hawick, Scotland, while Zara’s is finer gauge but embroidered with bunches of flowers. Fling yours over a nightie and you’re good to go.
