Fashion giant Lyst has just confirmed our love of the puffer. According to the online site, searches for puffer jackets have increased by 280 percent in the last month with oversized designs selling out instantaneously.
A favourite? The Raf Simons mega puffer debuted by Rihanna. Having sold out within 48 hours, for every coat available on the site, 1,020 people attempted to purchase one.
Undoubtedly, when the fash pack flocked to the capital ahead of London Fashion Week, it wasn’t merely the catwalks that we couldn’t take our eyes off but the streets.
Come September the leopard print coat is what florals are to spring, ‘groundbreaking’, to quote the sarcastic phrase of Miranda Priestly.
But what we didn’t expect to find this season was the revival of the marmite garment.
Once a piece famously paraded across Albert Square by one redheaded Eastender in particular, the puffer jacket has made an unforeseen comeback.
Boasting a marshmallow shape similar to that of the Michelin Man, the puffer jacket has divided opinion since it first walked the catwalk in 1937.
American Designer Charles James takes credit for introducing his take on the puffer with a surprisingly elegant swan down jacket with a silky exterior and padding that can only be likened to that of a duvet.
But since the thirties, the fashion industry hasn’t re-visited the idea of dressing for practicality in the same way since. Until now.
With a need for nostalgia dominating our Instagram feeds with retro Kate Moss snaps, Champion t-shirts and Adidas tracksuits galore, it was only a matter of time until the industry paid tribute to the puffer.
Balenciaga was of course first to declare a re-discovered love for the ‘90s garment when designer Demna Gvasalia made his debut. The autumn/winter ’16 line featured slogan emblazoned sweatshirts, power-shoulder suits and of course, the puffer.
Decked in tractor red, the supersized coat made its comeback swaddled upon the shoulders of models.
But what officially confirmed the puffer jacket’s unanticipated return to mainstream fashion was the unforeseen drop by high street retailers. Zara was the first to wheel rails of primary red puffers into stores followed by jet black and even metallic numbers.
Topshop Boutique was next to supply the coat in puffed up proportions with a plush pink button up which sold out instantaneously. It’s safe to say fashion just got practical again and we cannot get enough.
Whether you’re planning a ski trip come new year, prepping for the British weather or simply channelling your inner ‘90s nostalgia, shop the drop below for the puffer jackets we’re lusting over this season.
