Naomi Osaka might be known first and foremost for her prowess as a tennis player, as well as her willingness to speak upabout mental wellbeing and social justice, but she's also emerging as quite the fashion heavyweight. Not only is she going to co-host this year's Met Gala, but she is one of the faces of Louis Vuitton. And now she's adding designer to her ever-burgeoning CV, with a collaboration with the most classic denim outfitter of all time: Levi's.
The four-piece, limited-edition collection is available from today and uses either vintage or upcycled denim. And let's just get something straight; these aren't your everyday jeans or jackets. Each piece has something special about it. The Crystal Fringe Short, for example, is made using vintage 501 shorts, and is laced with crystal fringing on the front and back pockets for some disco flavour. Osaka wears them with a ribbed black tank and diamanté choker in the campaign - and you can't help think it's the perfect outfit for a festival or hitting the clubs after a year spent cooped up indoors.
Then there's the Denim Kimono, a new take on the perennial denim jacket, that comes with a thick obi belt; a nod to Osaka's Japanese heritage. 'I always loved wearing kimonos when I was a kid. So, to be able to do it in denim felt really different and a bit unexpected,' she says.
Rounding out the collection is another pair of shorts, this time an elongated cycling style with a criss-cross tie at the reverse (made from upcycled men's jeans) and the Trucker Jacket Bustier, a corset top that is 'so cute!' according to Osaka. 'The sustainability aspect was super important to me. And I love that every piece in the collection has been recycled or repurposed from old stock.'
