What with the bombardment of marketing emails and enticing codes circulating via Whatsapp, it’s easy to get swept up by the excitement of Black Friday. If you don’t comply and go on a shopping spree you can get major FOMO.
However, in recent years there has been a welcome backlash against the the excessive consumerism. There’s the alternative ‘Buy Nothing Day’ and some companies - including the likes of Patagonia, Fat Face and Lush - have been avoiding the hype and donating their profits to charity.
Here at Grazia we thought Black Friday was a great opportunity to support a worthy cause, in this case, Mission Christmas. Organised by the charity Cash For Kids, Mission Christmas is the largest annual Christmas toy appeal in the UK.
In 2016 the appeal generated upwards of £15.5 million in gifts and donations which were distributed to more than 360,000 disadvantaged kids across the UK. With 1 in 4 children across the UK living in poverty this December, for many families Christmas is simply a luxury they can’t afford. This year’s Mission Christmas aims to beat last year’s fundraising total and help make sure it can help as many children as possible.
