We can probably all agree that at this time of the year we embrace of all things cosy, and there's one jumper in particular that will have you dreaming about crisp winter walks, hot chocolates by the fire and evenings on the sofa - the cable knit. Boasting an enduring legacy, one that has origins in the Aran Islands, the cable knit has developed beyond its utilitarian beginnings to become somewhat of a symbol of chic nonchalance.
Now, Marks and Spencer has created a new iteration of the cable knit, that features a roll neck and textural ribbed hemline, all to prove that this classic design can still feel relevant and - crucially - essential in 2024. The Cable Knit Roll Neck Jumper, £35, comes in four different colours; ivory, mid grey marl, toffee and burgundy (although this shade is so popular, it's already sold out) and looks so cosy I had to head into my local M&S store to try it on.

Although the burgundy shade is sold out, there are three other colours options to choose from. This mid grey marl is another one of my favourites and is designed with the same regular fit, roll neck and ribbed hemline.
Said jumper was everything I wanted in a cable knit, and then some. There's nothing worse than a roll neck that's scratchy or too tight, but this one is snug and most definitely not restrictive. The jumper is also a flattering shape and perfectly oversized. The textured cable knit was always going add a richness and depth to the otherwise uncomplicated design, but the M&S one delivers timelessness and wearability in spades - and I'm planning on making a return trip to pick up another colour.
To style M&S' take on a classic cable knit, try tucking it into high-waisted leather trousers or over the top of a black maxi slip dress. Add a longline wool coat and a pair of chunky loafers, or keep it simple and add chunky ankle boots. Fortunately the jumper's soft, neutral tone makes it pretty straightforward to style.

The popular jumper also comes in a classic ivory hue, one which looks rather similar to the Celine cable knit sweater that's been seen on Molly Mae.
Given the cable knit jumper's accessible price point, classic design and luxurious texture that feels a lot more expensive than it is, it's no wonder the jumper is selling out fast.

M&S also stock the jumper in a mustard/brown shade. This colour would look best paired with other neutral tones, like darker brown corduroy trousers or green cargos.
