Just 48 hours after Inauguration Day, has Kate Middleton chosen to pay a subtle homage to Kamala Harris? Appearing on a video call with nurses who are on the frontline of the coronavirus crisis this morning, Middleton accessorised with a pair of pearl drop earrings from Simone Rocha.
Pearls have become something of a calling card for Harris, harking back to her days at Howard and her old sorority, Alpha Kapha Alpha. Along with her joyfully jewel-bright coat from Christopher John Rogers, she chose to wear a specially-commissioned pearl necklace from Wilfredo Rosado, a jeweller based in New York, to be sworn in on Wednesday. Women around the world also pledged to wear pearls as a visual tribute to the new Madame Vice President. The Facebook group, 'Wear Pearls On Jan 20th, 2021', amassed more than 464,000 by Inauguration Day.
The royal family is not allowed to express their personal political opinions - in a brilliant viral moment, Princess Anne appeared to shrug when her mother, the Queen, beckoned her to greet then-President Donald Trump - so while it’s unlikely that she was trying to send a subtle message of support, it is possible that she’ll start wearing her pearls even more frequently as the gentlest of nods. They do, after all, strike the right note for the times we’re living in - less flashy than diamonds, a little more formal than hoops or studs - and have been something of a go-to for her hectic schedule of video calls. And while her exact earrings are no longer available, there's plenty more pearl power where they came from.
