Kamala Harris's double string of pearls, and matching orb-shaped earrings, have become as much of a signature as herfamous Converse. Now, women across the US, and no doubt across the world, are donning their very own pearls in tribute to the woman about to become the Vice President. A Facebook group called, 'Wear Pearls On Jan 20th, 2021,' created by Hope Aloaye on December 5, has more than 447,000 members, and encourages each to wear pearls in solidarity with Harris.
The incoming Vice President, who will be sworn in later today, is a long-time fan of pearls, beginning her allegiance as a student at Howard, and as a member of the sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha.

The fashion world fell for pearls a few years ago, spurred on by Simone Rocha (the designer’s pearl-studded slides, drop earrings and hairbands are the ultimate waist-up accessories) and The Favourite (I barely noticed the plotline compared to the gorgeous teardrops on Emma Stone). Kate Middleton has a favourite pair of pearl earrings from Accessorize - sadly now sold out - while Jodie Comer, a brilliant waist-up dresser if there ever was one, favours a spiral hoop pair from Completedworks. A pearl necklace might seem a little Margaret Thatcher, but there’s an easy way to dial up the modern. Simply layer with some gold pendant necklaces, or even a string or diamante, and they’ll look anything but conversative tonight.
