Forget New York, London, Paris and Milan for one moment - Kansas is the city of fashion this season. Yes, hear us out.

Exhibit A - the high street. This season, the shops are a fine demonstration of the state’s sartorial influence.

Because there's only one print you’ll want to get your hands on this month and that’s picnic gingham.

First donned on screen by actress July Garland in the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz, the dainty print has forever possessed the traditional prairie girl aesthetic. But this season, it’s undergone a style transformation.

For 2017, forget prim and proper as we’re coveting the print in the shape of ruffled shirts, oversized dresses and ribbon-tied ballet flats. And the high street is awash with the print in all its checked glory.

The trend was introduced to us by Shrimps at the spring/summer '17 show as designer Hannah Weiland dressed models in lace, broderie anglaise and wholehearted gingham.

Citing British artist Edward Wadsworth, the designer curated a line which embodied an aesthetic associated with rural America, conveyed through bonnets embroidered with sweet girls clasping pitchforks.

So this season don the print in abundance. Layer spaghetti-strap gingham slips over white t-shirts, pair white ruffled shirts with black checked trousers and invest in Miu Miu's most coveted ballerina pumps of all time.

But who is offering the highly sought after trend? Look to Ganni for an early autumnal take on the print (perfect for trans-seasonal investments), Topshop for pretty girl get-ups and of course Zara, where the windows are decked in all mighty gingham. After all, there's only one place like Zara...

So get your credit cards at the ready and invest in as many garms as your arms can possible carry. You're bound to cheer up fellow commuters in one (Dorothy-inspired) swoop.
