First things first: what's the purpose of front fastening bras?
Originally designed to help support women post-surgery, a front fastening bra's main purpose is the ease to put on and take off. Rather than having to stretch your arms, back and shoulders in order to secure your bra, the front fastening feature allows you to quickly and easily do your bra up from the front (obviously).
This makes them particularly amazing for anyone suffering from physical disabilities, mobility problems, post-surgery and of course, those of us who just struggle with the standard back fastening bra. Shout out to the do-it-up-and-twist-it-round gang.
What are the advantages to a front fastening bra?
-
Easier to put on
-
Easier to take off
-
Usually features a full coverage back that allows for more support, and a smoother line under clothes
-
Wider/thicker straps for shoulder comfort - great for larger busts
-
Racer back is great if you find your straps tend to slip off your shoulders often
What's the best type of fastening?
This is a super important factor to consider when choosing a front closing bra - while zips can be great, they don't always sit flat under clothing and if you choose poor quality can slide down throughout the day.
A single clasp is the easiest option in terms of doing the bra up - and allows for a deeper plunge (if that's the look you're after) but for someone who wants slightly more coverage and support in the front, opt for something with multiple hook and eyes like a traditional bra.
Can front fastening bras still be stylish?
Of course! While mostly designed for functionality and comfort, many brands have worked long and hard to design front fastening bras that not only work good but look good, too. Even Skims have hit the market with a front clasping bralette while Bravissimo and Pour Moi have some gorgeous lace options. Keep scrolling for our edit of the most stylish front fastening bras.
