TheFriendsreunion has only just been announced, but in fashion land, the influence of Rachel, Monica and Phoebe’s wardrobes never really went away. Because seriously, could the clothes BE any better?
Straight-leg jeans, sweatshirts, slip dresses, knee-high boots - all worn with the kind of West Village cool that they brew at Central Perk - are as worthy of an ‘Oh. My. God’ now as they were in 1994.
Today’s fashion plates all look like they’ve been watching Netflix’s reruns religiously. Check out Kaia Gerber in button-down cardigans (ahem, Monica) or Hailey Bieber in varsity sweatshirts (FYI, Rachel got there first). Here are the pieces they’ve bookmarked.
Straight-leg jeans
Just as ‘Joey doesn’t share food!’, Rachel doesn’t wear anything but straight when it comes to jeans. Put down the skinnies and, like Bella Hadid, opt for a shape that sits high on the waist and stops just beneath the ankle like the Levi’s 724s.
Cardigans
The cardigan has finally found its sexy side - and you have Monica to thank. The trend for leaving the bottom half of your buttons undone - nonchalant, no? - has found a fan club in today’s It girls. If your belly button is strictly off-limits until bikini season, be sure to avoid low-slung styles.
Faux-fur coats
Phoebe was forced to apologise to a squirrel (yes, really) after wearing a mink coat so rest-assured this tangerine chubby is of the faux variety. We have a feeling that, circa 2020, she would buy hers from Shrimps and style it with a black polo neck and knee-high boots.
Slogan sweatshirts
Whether or not you think the Knicks rule, you can still wear the merch for mooching around the house if you’re Rachel. Fast-forward to 2020 and you’ll find Hailey Bieber dressing up her college sweats with sharp-shouldered blazers.
Gingham dresses
The gingham shift dress will always be a hit, whether it skims the thigh like Rachel’s or hits that mid-calf sweet spot. The former probably styled hers with chunky mules, but bare legs and two-strap sandals feels right for now.
