Dua Lipa is no stranger to a bit of Versace. But it seems the star is no longer content with merely rocking the label to almost every red-carpet she’s ever stepped on to – now she’s designing it too.
In May last year, at an intimate fashion show held at a waterfront villa in Cannes, the singer unveiled her debut collection, co-designed with the house’s iconic creative director Donatella Versace. Entitled ‘La Vacanza’ – the Italian word for vacation – this was the duo’s interpretation of a dream holiday wardrobe, dolce vita style. As guests including Simone Ashley and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley took their seats on bistro tables dotted around the edge of the pool, bouffant blow-dried models twirled down a catwalk in the centre of the water in a series of first-class jet-set ensembles.
There were nipped-waist skirt Italian wool suits in gelato shades of strawberry and bubblegum, Versace-branded terrycloth cover-ups, sparkling swimsuits and metallic foil leather mini dresses. Lila Moss took a turn on the catwalk wearing a lilac crystal cut-out detail cocktail dress – ideal for sundowners on the Amalfi Coast – while Y2K catnip came in the form of chunky flatform sliders, bucket hats and butterfly motif bomber jackets – a modern reinterpretation of an archival print.
'We wanted to make a holiday wardrobe and something that I’ll wear all summer,' Dua Lipa said in a press conference held prior to the runway show, while Donatella added after the show; ‘This is the perfect summer collection—from lying by the pool in a fun printed bikini, to dressing-up to dance on hot summer evenings in the perfect evening dress—these clothes immediately make me think of my holidays and being in the sun.’
A certified Versace muse, Dua Lipa has starred as the face of the house’s campaigns, become a permanent fixture on its front rows and even modelled on its runway (she opened and closed the spring/summer 2022 show), but the collection marks the Grammy-winning singer’s first foray into design.
‘We first met in 2016, at Dua’s first Brit Awards performance,’ said Donatella. From that moment on, their friendship blossomed. But it was on a night out in New York that the plan to collaborate was hatched, with Lipa revealing that the collection first came to life via sketches she drew for Donatella last year. ‘Donatella’s supported me from the very beginning,’ said Lipa. 'We’ve worked together a lot over time but the opportunity to step inside the atelier has been absolutely mind-blowing. It’s been a real dream come true.’
Lipa cited a long waistcoat-tailored gown as her favourite piece in the collection, while fans looking to invest in a piece of fashion history will no doubt have their eye on the butterfly motif mini skirt made from the house’s signature summer metal mesh.
