Regardless of what's happening right now, everyone needs a break, whether that's committing to quarantine after an amber list holiday or taking a chance on the weather with a British staycation. Either or, it's time to get excited about packing again, and that pre-holiday feeling where you can almost taste the Aperols already.
If you ask me, it’s never too early to start prepping for your summer getaway, But if you're travelling lightly with limited baggage allowance, how can you possibly pack for every potential Instagram opportunity?
Having recently visited Lisbon's stunning Palácio Príncipe Real, I curated the perfect capsule wardrobe for my stay, covering everything from shopping to yoga to fine dining at the infamous JNCQUOI. So leave your sartorial dilemmas to us and instead concentrate on sourcing go-to spots ahead of your trip.
The Co-Ord
Trust us, there's no greater investment than a tailored two-piece, like this rented Stine Goya co-ord. It's practical and comfy but still feels more fashion-forward. Elevate you look for the evening with a clutch bag and a pair of wedges.
Top tip: choose a co-ord that best compliments the colours you already have packed in your case. This way you can easily mix and match, meaning you'll have more outfit choices than you bargained for.
Clever Accessories
I apologise for sounding like your mum, but the chance of surviving a city break without proper footwear is slim, very slim. Before you leave, invest in a brilliant pair of box-fresh trainers, guaranteed to see you through your trip. Channel the minimalist aesthetic in a pair of Sans Martin's.
Next up, it's the cross body bag. Think of it like the bum bag's stylish sister. You can still take your favourite IT bag too, like this rented Bottega Veneta cassette bag. (It's also handy to have both of your hands free when climbing aboard the tram with a coffee in hand, from Lisbon's Bettina & Niccolò Corallo.)
The 'It' Swimsuit
Whether you're basking in a pool or taking a dip in the sea, you'll want to take swimwear that makes you feel great. Try sixties-inspired high-waisted bikinis or perhaps a bold one-piece, like this snake print costume from 8SWIM London - complete with matching scrunchie.
Top tip: no room for a coverup? Light-weight towels, like this one from Futah, can double up as a sarong. (Also, don't forget to pick up a bottle of V.SUN suncream from Lisbon's SKINLIFE – thank us later.)
Why not try: don't forget swimsuits can double up as bodysuits, which will look great paired with high-waisted trousers or skirts.
The PJ Shirt
Who said pyjamas are only for bed? Find a pyjama shirt that doubles up as a top for the daytime, like this one from Next. Style it with a knot in the front or by tucking it in, and make sure to pair it with something that mirrors its relaxed fit, like these wide-leg trousers.
Why not try: you can use a shirt like this for the beach, too. Just add a shell necklace and you're good to go.
The City-To-Beach Accessories
Introducing, the summer accessory I didn't know I needed – the rope belt. From day to night, city to beach, this multi-functioning belt will see you through your summer city break. Wrap it around your beach romper to create shape, or thread it through your denim shorts for some nautical detailing.
Before you think I've forgotten about the trusty straw bag, I would suggest they're not the easiest thing to pack in a small suitcase. Instead, I would opt for this season's penchant for hand-crafted textiles, like a crochet bag or this macrame shopper. What's great about these bags is their lack of structure, meaning you can screw, fold, scrunch, roll - whatever your preferred method of packing is - with no worries about ruining it.
The Summer Dress
It's not a summer break without a summer dress. That's why it's important you pack the perfect one - like this rented FARM RIO number - which you can wear multiple times (without Instagram thinking it's the only item you packed). The key is styling. Be creative - add/swap out a belt, open the buttons for the beach, dress it up with wedges and a red lip for a cocktail or dress down with sandals, shades and a shopper.
The Holiday Jumpsuit
Sometimes it's nice to throw something on and head out, where minimal thought is required, which is where jumpsuits come in. They require minimal faffing and can be dressed up or down depending on your plans.
Top tip: a pair of soft flats for your trip is a must – and easy to pack. A pair like these velvet flats from LACHOIX will offer you all the comfort of trainers but look a bit dressier.
