This Delicious Shade Of Butter Yellow Is Oscars-Approved – And It’s All Over The High Street

Warning: may induce cravings.

In what might come as a blow to the dairy-free community, butter is having a moment in this spring. Thankfully, it's not just being eaten but also worn, with butter yellow emerging as the hero shade from the streets outside the shows this fashion month, not to mention the Oscars' red carpet.

The colour received a winning endorsement from Timothée Chalamet. His Givenchy suit was the most delicious shade of butter imaginable and something of a feast for the eyes compared to your average black tuxedo.

Chalamet's style move is just the latest example of how the fashion world has gone Utterly Butterly. Tiffany Hsu packed a fuzzy coat the colour of panna cotta from The Frankie Shop, spiking the look with a pair of chilli-hot tights. In Copenhagen, show-goers wore top-to-toe Lurpack (always slightly salted), with one sporting a puffer jacket and feather-trimmed trousers in just-churned shades so delectable they made passersby want to order a bread basket.

This isn't the first time yellow has come up trumps. In 2023, the shade du jour was sherbet, a slightly bolder hue that was rather like lemon curd, tart yet sumptuous. We've also seen more subtle gradations like popcorn and clotted cream. For 2025, however, butter is the one, whether your preference is President, Kerrygold, Anchor or, whisper it, margerine.

The high street has committed to butter for spring - and customers, clearly, can't get enough of the stuff. At ASOS, sales of yellow are up by 220% in comparison to last year (Topshop's buttermilk trench coat has been a runaway hit and, thankfully, is due a restock). A Whistles leather co-ord in the shade has almost entirely sold out online. Karen Millen's blazer and pencil skirt combo, meanwhile, is only available in a size 10. Thankfully, the brand's single-breasted leather coat is still on the menu in most sizes.

If you’re thinking this sounds like a whole lot of impractical pastels for the school run or simply the commute, you’re not wrong - and is perhaps why certain retailers have opted for buttery accessories that you can add to an otherwise hard-working outfit. John Lewis's faux-leather shoulder bag will add a hint of the good stuff without the risk of a stain. M&S's ballet flats, meanwhile, require a more judicious checking of your weather app before leaving the house but will almost definitely put a spring in your step.

Topshop's faux-leather coat in sumptuous buttermilk was so popular it's currently sold out in all sizes. Never fear, however, it's due a restock.
