Burgundy bridesmaid dresses

Now that you've sorted your own wedding dress (hopefully!), it's time to start thinking about your bridesmaid dresses. And one colour that's consistently popular on the wedding circuit - and for a good reason - is burgundy, a brilliant option if you're planning an autumn or winter ceremony. It's also a great choice if you want to let your bridesmaids choose their own dresses in a matching colour - a lovely way to ensure they can wear them again instead of being a rather unsustainable one-off - because, as you can see from our edit below, there's something for everyone.

In more recent years, sage green bridesmaid dresses have dominated summer wedding trends but when it comes to winter nuptials, slightly darker shades come into play such as navy, burgundy and even black. Something about a full-bodied red feels right for a colder time of year, and in terms of celebrity endorsements, you've got Keira Knightley, who attended her brother's wedding wearing a simple yet striking burgundy bridesmaid dress that flared to the knee.

Burgundy is a rich shade of red, rather like the wine, and tends to look quite lustrous. It also suits a variety of fabrics, particularly velvet, which is always a good option for winter because of its warmth factor, and satin, which gives the colour a sheen that photographs beautifully.

How to style burgundy bridesmaid dresses

Whatever shade you decide on, accessories are important when it comes to completing your bridesmaid dress look. To dial up the romance of a burgundy dress, you could always thread flowers through your hair (something, ideally, that matches the bouquet you'll be carrying down the aisle). In terms of shoes, meanwhile, a neutral or a metallic is probably your safest bet with burgundy as bringing another colour into the mix will draw the eye away from the dress. I also think black will work surprisingly well - despite the fact that it's usually too much of a statement, especially with a pastel - which is excellent news if you have a trusty pair of black going-out heels.

Bridesmaid dress trends don't change as frequently as your average dress trends, but there are still certain styles that seem to make the rounds every wedding season. A cowl neckline, whether at the front or as a scoop at the back, has been popular for a few years now, as have gowns with tiny buttons trailing down the front (like Ghost's Delphine). Most bridesmaid dresses are floor-sweeping, but for summer 2024, I'm predicting that ankle-length dresses might start trending because they a) look very chic with flats and b) are much easier to rewear than a maxi style that's more of a gown.

Who usually pays for bridesmaid dresses?

In my experience, the person getting married usually pays for the bridesmaid dresses or outfits. But things are changing, with some brides offering to make a contribution or even asking their maids to foot the bill, with the caveat in both cases that their friends can choose what they wear (within set guidelines). With so many options to choose from in the world of burgundy bridesmaid dresses, it could be golden opportunity to buy something that you can rewear as a future wedding guest.
