Reminiscent of 1970’s poolside glamour, this nostalgic trend is having a resurgence in a big way, and is here to dominate our summer wardrobes .

Terry towelling has quickly become the unsung hero of our warm weather attire. And if you've been opening your wardrobe for the past few hot and sticky mornings thinking, 'I don't have anything cool!', it might just be the heatwave saviour you're looking for.

While terrycloth usually conjures up thoughts of cosy robes and beach towels, the fabric has been redefined this season in the shape of dresses, rompers, two-piece sets and even sandals. (Psst: the durability and versatility of a two-in-one garment - Peachy Den's striped style is the ultimate - makes it the best option for riding out the worst of this week's sweltering temperatures.)

Towelling has hit the high street in a major way - see Arket, & Other Stories and Weekday - but a host of small, independent labels is also banking on its retro flavour this summer. Close friends Lucy Halfpenny and fashion photographer Brigette Clarke were inspired by long European summers to launch Terry, after the pair met up wearing the same vintage terry-towelling bucket hat by chance. The Australian label offers carefree separates ideal for long summer days, reinterpreting sporty tennis pieces with an effortless, laid-back mood. Our favourite piece? This boxy beige short set, perfect as a pool cover-up or for picnics in the park.

The same goes for Lack of Color, another Aussie go-to when it comes to beachside accessories, and La Veste, the paintbox-bright brand from Blanca Miro, who has towelling kimonos on offer for the ultimate in poolside lounging.

Whether you’re wanting to dive headfirst into the trend, or just tip your toes in the water, here’s some of our favourite towelling picks.
