The weather's been decidedly unpredictable - sunny one minute, cloudy the next - but if you don't crack out a summer dress soon, mid-2021 might be your next opportunity.

You’ve probably got some old favourites that just need sunglasses, sandals and a straw hat to say ‘summer-ready’, but if you’re on the hunt for something new and don’t want to feel guilty about it, H&M has some cracking options. And they’re all under £50.

The brand is excelling at dresses with balloon sleeves and sweet-spot hemlines (that point between your mid-calf and ankle) at the moment. My favourites are this floral beauty and this puff sleeved style that is making me excited about the prospect of occasion dressing. I’d just add a pair of cat’s eye sunglasses - the London-based Hot Futures has classic all-rounders - and some practical sandals to make them less girlish.

The white dress is big news this summer, but it doesn’t have to be innocent and virginal if you don’t want it to be. This mini with flared hem certainly has butter-wouldn’t-melt qualities, but this shirt dress, with its wide collar and spare pleating, is a real palette-cleanser if you need a break from prints.
