Beige Brigade: How Did The Once-Boring Colour Become The Uniform For Fashion Insiders?

No longer boring, this neutral shade is in fact fashion's hottest choice.

I have a confession to make. I used to hate beige.

Growing up, beige was my ultimate insult. In my head, it was synonymous with bland, boring, dull. It didn't matter whether it was beige clothes, food or anything else for that matter, it was not a colour I wanted anything to do with.

Fast forward to 2020 and you cannot keep me away from the nude hue. Championed on the SS20 catwalks by the likes of BOSS, A.W.A.K.E Mode and Victoria Beckham (to name a few) it's no wonder everyone and their dog are sporting the classic shade.

Seen on the streets of Copenhagen Fashion Week in January and now trickling through to the streets of New York and London, the beige brigade has been out in full force. It makes sense – there's more of a focus on classic, investment buys at the moment rather than fast fashion fads that not only hurt your bank balance, but notably the environment too. And beige is timeless.

Think of beige outerwear (the classic trench, for example). It is arguably the most staple of all wardrobe staples. Chuck on over jeans and a hoody for an instant outfit elevator or co-ordinate in a full tonal ensemble in various shades of toffee, taupe and camel. A true timeless piece that if looked after, can see you through season-to-season.

While the thought of head-to-toe nude could feel a little dull (but not beige!), it need not be boring. Try adding a colour or print pop with your accessories, or style up with statement pieces with elevated details for the ultimate outfit upgrade.
