There was a time in the mid-noughties when the only garments worth owning were a grey marl sweatshirt, a pair of shiny black leggings, a raglan tee and a thigh-high tennis skirt. There were all, of course, from American Apparel.
The LA power brand struck the perfect balance between aspirational - Cali 'It' girls, like Lauren Conran, Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie, swore by it - and affordable. Its USP was also that everything was manufactured in the United States, setting itself apart from competitors as a brand who was mindful about people and planet.
Unfortunately, the tide had already started to turn against the company in 2016, when it filed for bankruptcy after slumping sales and the controversies surrounding its founder, Dov Charney, who left two years earlier in 2014. Nowadays, American Apparel is an online-only retailer. And although its mantra is, 'Globally-sourced, ethically-made, still sweatshop free,' it now mostly manufactures outside the US. For die-hard fans, however, who have been missing their fix of quality basics, it will come as very good news indeed that the label is now available exclusively on Amazon, with the same leggings, sweatshirts, bodysuits, tees and tennis skirts that you'll remember from the first time round.
