If you're a millennial who used to have a subscription to Blockbuster, there's one film that you will have rented on repeat in the early '00s: Cruel Intentions. Based on the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, it's got all the hallmarks of a cult classic - a hot cast (Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillippe, Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar), a naughty-but-ultimately-nice plot and, most importantly, killer clothes.
Like the first series of Sex and the City, which aired in 1998, Cruel Intentions is quite simply a masterclass in '90s style, which if you haven't noticed has kind of been having moment after moment ever since, well, it happened. The good news is that it's guaranteed to be on trend for a while yet because Cruel Intentions, wait for it, is being turned into an eight-part series by Amazon Prime.
And just like that, we've fallen down a rabbit hole of all the original outfits while we wait to hear who's been cast: Cecile's minty green sweater tied around her shoulders, Kathryn's hook-and-eye bustier, Annette's sweet but ever-so-slightly subversive headband as she hits the gas on the highway to the soundtrack of Bittersweet Symphony.
Decades later, Kathryn's wardrobe in particular is the gift that keeps on giving. Once you've suspended your disbelief that she's supposed to be a teenager, she pretty much has a wardrobe that could rival Carrie Bradshaw's. For the infamous kissing scene, she wears the iconic combination of an extravagantly-brimmed hat, a blazer and bug-eyed shades, all in black. It couldn't have draw a sharper contrast to the saccharine ice cream shades on Cecile - and if it didn't make you want to enter your villain era, nothing could.
