Remember the infamous Zara coat? The blue and white printed jacket, priced at £69.99, that garnered worldwide recognition and became an iconic high street fashion piece last year? It even had its own Instagram page (@thatcoat) where pictures of people spotted wearing That Coat were posted, which now has over 8,000 followers.

Well, this summer, to rival That Coat, another unsuspecting item from the Spanish fashion giant has captured the attention of women everywhere, and just like That Coat it has an entire Tumblr page dedicated to it: blueofftheshoulderdress.tumblr.com.

The blue off-shoulder dress has become something of a cult product. Retailing for just £30, it has now completely sold out and can be seen on women all over the world.

The Tumblr website was created by Lulu Krause, a New York based comedian, who started to notice the dress last year. Speaking to Refinery29 she said: ‘I wasn’t actively searching for a project like this – the dress was popping up so frequently that it’s almost like…it chose me.’

What started as ‘an inside joke with just [her]self’, turned into game of 'spot the dress' with friends, and has since gone viral. ‘I probably get an average of eight or nine photos from friends every week,’ she explained. ‘These include sightings in Vancouver, Greece, Spain, a lot from Italy, and across the United States.'

Other big high street retailers like Mango and ASOS also offer their own versions of this simple dress design, which, according to Lulu isn’t even comfortable to wear. ‘The reason I am so fascinated by this dress in particular is that it’s remarkably constricting,’ she explained. ‘I’d say you lose around 80 percent of your mobility in it – your arms can’t go above 45 degrees without compromising the intended shape of the garment.’

Despite its design flaw, the agreed sentiments of Lulu and all the women who have purchased it is that the dress is very flattering and easy to wear in summer (and incredibly well-priced).

If it comes back in stock, will you be running to Zara to bag yourself one?
