When it comes to the Met gala, there’s one question amongst those without a ticket to the prestigious opening night of the museum’s exhibition that always bubbles up: How do the celebrities actually sit at their tables, wearing these huge and often impractical dresses? How did Katy Perry, dressed as a chandelier, enjoy her starters, and how did Rihanna eat her dessert in 2017, donning a bulbous Comme Des Garçons floral dress? This year, it was the South African singer, Tyla, who left spectators wondering about how she would get through the night, without being able to move an awful lot.

The moment the 22-year-old stepped out on the red carpet, the memes came flooding in. Dressed in a gown sculpted based on a cast of her body and covered in three types of sand and micro-crystals, the singer had to be carried up the stairs by security guards between each interview.

The strapless gown, trailing into a mermaid train, was masterminded by Olivier Rousteing, creative director at Balmain, who has got a longstanding history of presenting jaw-dropping Met gala moments over the years, featuring dresses for JLo, Ice Spice, Kylie Jenner and many others. Tyla’s look was complete with an hourglass clutch by the brand, making a stealth nod to last night’s dress code ‘The Garden Of Time’.

And how did she sit? At the end of the night, Tyla was seen leaving the venue having shed the long train, as well the dress having come undone. That'll do the trick.
