The Oscars of the fashion world - the one and only Met Gala - is unfolding as we speak outside New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year's theme is Sleeping Beauties, Reawakening Fashion - the corresponding exhibition of the same name, meanwhile, has already been unveiled and will be open to the public from 10 May - 2 September - and has brought together 220 garments and accessories that are visually connected via nature, creating a sensory experience for visitors as well as a display 'which also serves as a metaphor for the transience of fashion'.

On the hallowed red carpet, which actually wasn't red at all but cream and green to create the effect of dappled shadows of sunlight through branches, A-listers leaned into the dress code of 'The Garden of Time', most especially the night's co-chairs: Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, Anna Wintour, and Zendaya, who wore a spectacularly theatrical gown by Maison Margiela Artisanal.

Elements of the natural world were cleverly woven into outfits (see Zendaya, whose peacock blue gown sprouted garlands that curled around her shoulders and arms). Vogue's Anna Wintour broke with tradition by choosing Loewe (she normally wears Chanel), whose creative director, Jonathan Anderson, is an honourary chair of tonight's event. Her floor-length black coat blossomed with three-dimensional sprigs of flowers. Elsewhere, Greta's Lee gauzy breastplate was another beautiful creation by Loewe, while Lana Del Rey, who arrived looking resplendent in Alexander McQueen, wore a gown swathed in tulle and embellished with twigs, making for quite a spellbinding entrance.

Also spellbinding? Kendall Jenner's Givenchy Haute Couture gown that was hand-embroidered over 500 hours, designed by Alexander McQueen, and, as it was only ever presented in bust form for fall/winter 1999, has never been worn before.
