Designer Tommy Hilfiger is auctioning priceless items from his extensive collection of memorabilia from the worlds of fashion, art, film and pop culture, including a pair of jeans worn by Marilyn Monroe that are currently valued at around $40,000.
The iconic denim in question was worn by the actress in the 1954 film River of No Return, described as ‘zip fly jeans with a single button stamped Foremost JCP Co. and two cross-stitched back pockets.’ This isn’t the first pair of Marilyn’s jeans that Hilfiger has owned and then given away: he has previously given a pair to Britney Spears and another to Naomi Campbell.
Also up for grabs are a set of four signed David Bowie tarot prints (valued between $5,000 and £7,000), a collection of vintage dresses by Louis Feraud and Oscar de la Renta (previously owned by Hilfiger’s wife Dee Ocleppo) and a pair of ‘70s platform boots worn by KISS guitarist Ace Frehley.
The auction will take place on October 21st at Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles, but international bidders can also take part online by registering on juliensauctions.com beforehand. Some of the proceeds earmarked for the Autism Speaks foundation, a charitable organisation for people with autism and their families.
‘I am excited to partner with Julien’s on this auction which will benefit Autism Speaks – an organisation and cause that I am passionate about,’ the designer said in a statement. ‘Inspired by my love of fashion, art, music and entertainment, the auction will offer iconic pieces from pop culture history including Marilyn Monroe’s jeans, Mick Jagger’s leather vest and Andy Warhol’s Liza Minelli and ‘Truman Capote.’
‘I have been a long-time collector of American art and memorabilia and have had the privilege of enjoying these items for many years. It is time to pass them along for others to appreciate,’ he added.
