TikTok, the short-form video app that has taken over 2020, has fast established itself as a creative space – particularly when it comes to fashion. Not only has it become one of the biggest success stories of 2020 (possibly due to us all being stuck indoors on our phones), it has also brought some much-needed joy to our lives throughout the pandemic.
High-end brands have already caused a serious stir on the app, from the Grannies of Gucci to a Harry Styles' crocheting trend that led JW Anderson to release a pattern to recreate his famous rainbow cardigan. Fashion brands are using TikTok to show their personality and are reacting and adapting to the TikTok community - sharing content in a uniquely "TikTok way".
The staggering thing about TikTok is, content can can go viral without so much as a single follower, and therefore is being shared with an audience that may never have engaged with them before. Some of our favourite insta-girls are making their debut on the app - Leonie Hanne only recently joined during lockdown and has already amassed over 420k followers & 4.8m likes. There has also been a spike in supermodel activity: Bella Hadid, Cara Delevingne, and Kaia Gerber are just a few famous faces who have popped up on our feeds of late while fashion pack leaders Jacquemus' Simon Porte and Tamu McPherson have recently succumbed to the app.
In a move towards more "real" content from celebrities and influencers, creators have been moving away from the super perfect and polished feeds we have become accustomed to seeing. A new generation are using the platform to showcase their love of fashion in relatable and even useful ways – whether that’s through DIY videos demonstrating how to upcycle old pieces, outfit inspo, clear outs or crocheting - TikTok is a great source of inspiration.
