Hands up who's already mainlined all ten episodes of Emily in Parisseason three? Ever since the show launched in 2020, Emily's imperious French boss Sylvie Grateau (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) has stood out as the show’s most reliably stylish character (no berets or fingerless leather biker gloves here, thanks), nailing relaxed Parisienne luxe as easily as if she were, in fact, a relaxed Parisienne. Which is exactly what actress Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu is. Since 1983, when she made her screen debut in Roger Vadim’s French language comedy-drama The Surprise Party, Philippine has been a staple on European red carpets and has a mesmerising catalogue of glamorous looks behind her.
Speaking about discovering her style as a teenager to Australian Vogue, Philippine credits her mother, Italian model Francoise Laurent, with ‘training’ her in fashion.
‘She was a very original person, always ahead of fashion,’ she said. ‘She was always very creative, always mixing a lot of different stuff … she kind of gave me an eye for these things.
‘I like to try things, not to be “in fashion.” I don't really care about that. It's more about what looks beautiful with a twist, with a sense of humour. That's really important. When you wear something that's supposed to be super elegant, to have that little twist, that I'm not taking it seriously. Because otherwise, you know, you're a princess. I'm not a princess.’
