If you’re regarding the news that Sex and the Cityis back with the same trepidation you would an ‘I miss u’ text from an ex then that’s understandable. After the disaster that was the second film, and the fact that Kim Cattrall will not be participating in the new 10-part series, you might be half excited/half nervous.
Personally, without Samantha, well, 'I'm sorry. I can't. Don't hate me'. But, if we’re to take one lesson into 2021, it’s surely to look on the bright side. And the thing is, whatever has happened to Carrie, Miranda (criminally underrated, we’re pinning our zingy one-liner hopes on her now) and Charlotte in the intervening decade, you can count on one thing: great clothes. From the best episodes to the second film, Sex and the City always delivered when it came to fashion.
Sex and the City made name necklaces and corsages A Thing, took Oscar de la Renta cocktail dresses to McDonalds and introduced a whole generation of women to HRH Manolo Blahnik. Through the clothes, costume designer Patricia Field created the ultimate New York fantasy: glamorous, spontaneous, wild, a place where anything is possible (even to be a freelance journalist – who curiously does not know how to use email – can amass a shoe collection worth more than the deposit on an Upper West Side apartment).
So, I couldn’t help but wonder… what might Carrie be wearing now? Our leading lady might now be in her fifties, but she’ll still be in an enduring relationship with fashion. Here is a wishlist of pieces we’ll see her in next...
SS21 Predictions For Carrie Bradshaw
Versace SS21
Carrie was the queen of the bare midriff (once worn inexplicably with a waist belt around hers) so we'd love to see her in this Versace look. The cut-out, 'thong' waistband is also a suitable offbeat Bradshaw-worthy touch.
Dolce & Gabbana SS21
This is a four-in-one Carrie worthy look: a corsage, patchwork (I still fantasise about the patchwork coat she wore in the third season), knee-high boots and Dolce & Gabbana. It would be rude not to see her in this.
Acne SS21
There was a whole episode of Sex and the City dedicated to the naked dress, and Carrie was always a dedicated fan of the 'underwear as outerwear' trend. She would look great in this Acne SS21 take.
Chanel SS21
Carrie loved a peddle-pusher and now, courtesy of Chanel, they are back too.
Christopher John Rogers SS21
Can't you imagine Carrie wearing this, slow dancing with Big in Central Park or whatever they're up to now? Best of all, it's by Christopher John Rogers, one of the most exciting young designers in New York. It would be savvy - and stylish - to see the 2021 Carrie championing emerging talents.
Coperni SS21
Worn with a tutu in the credits, and pepto pink trousers in season three, a tank top was one of Carrie's understated wardrobe heroes. The 2021 way to wear? With super slouchy trousers, as seen at Coperni. Note: this time around, no corsage necessary.
Halpern SS21
Well it wouldn't be a Carrie Bradshaw wardrobe without something totally out there would it? 2021 Carrie needs some Halpern feathers in her closet.
Prada SS21
Yes, yes and yes! Carrie loved a swishy skirt and she loved Prada, so this SS21 look is made for her.
Miu Miu SS21
Cast your mind back to season four, episode two, 'The Real Me' AKA the one where Carrie does a runway show in nothing but a pair of Dolce & Gabbana knickers and a satin coat. Think of this Miu Miu look as a modern upgrade (we're not sure she will have been wooed into trainers yet, however).
Tod's SS21
The waistcoat. The deliberately odd colours. The thick socks. We can see Carrie in this look for off-duty.
Vivienne Westwood SS21
It wasn't all flat caps and fingerless gloves, Carrie also had a soft spot for wardrobe classics like the little black dress. This one is by Vivienne Westwood - besides, surely she deserves another shot in the designer after the Big wedding disaster?
Molly Goddard SS21
And finally... If we cannot have Samantha then we at least demand a tutu! This tulle dress by Molly Goddard is a so-now update on the iconic credits look.
