Rihanna is know to be a lover of all things vintage, from her Chanel water bottle holder, to her vintage YSL look at the 2018 Grammys. Last night, she sported yet another vintage look at the premiere of Queen & Slim. The black satin kimono dress was designed by John Galliano, originally included in his spring/summer 1995 collection. But before you get carried away with an image of Rihanna digging through an endless Galliano archive, that's not quite how the dress was sourced.
Rihanna actually follows a long list of celebrities such as Adwoa Aboah, Amal Clooney, Jodie Comer and Megan Markle that have all sourced their vintage pieces from William Vintage, London's renowned designer vintage boutique. Marie Blanchet, CEO of William Vintage, said, 'I see William Vintage, not as a vintage business which sells old clothes, but as a fashion brand that makes fashion without actually making the clothes, instead sourcing them and making an edit of pieces that are not only relevant historically and within each of the designer’s careers, but also pieces that look strikingly modern.’
The trickle-down effect is evident as Alice Casely-Hayword recently reported on the rise in vintage influencers: 'Once vintage shopping meant trawling through musty rails at a second-hand store or car boot sale. Now it’s as easy as the tap of a finger, thanks to the rise of vintage dealers, fashion editors and influencers on Instagram, selling a personal curation of pre-loved fashion finds on their feeds.'
This reignited love affair with vintage comes at a crucial time, too. Sustainability is at the forefront of most people's minds in our current climate crisis and vintage is a great way to navigate that. You're still experiencing the thrill of buying something new, without contributing to pollution produced during manufacture or, indeed, to landfill. Well, if it's good enough for Rihanna....
