The name ‘Ralph Lauren’ means different things to different generations. For many, he’s been an icon of all-American fashion for over half a century. For children of the late 80s and 90s, he’s Rachel Green’s boss – until she gets fired for taking a meeting with Gucci, that is. For others, it’s not Ralph Lauren but Polo Sport, his diffusion label launched in 1992, that was truly a game-changer. It was the first time a luxury brand had really championed sportswear - and vintage tees, zip-up tops and even tote bags from the Polo Sport archive are still in-demand on Etsy.
The good news is now you don’t have to spend hours trawling the internet to unearth an old gem. Ralph Lauren has relaunched the brand today under two collections - Polo Sport Denim and Polo Sport Silver - and the reissues are every bit as good as the 90s originals. The former is where you’ll find the classics - the perfectly proportioned indigo-wash jacket, complete with American flag and Polo Sport logo on the reverse, the straight-legged and slightly skater-style jeans, the high-rise denim shorts and two baseball caps. The latter, designed as a men’s capsule, is a little more blingy. Think tracksuits, anoraks and hats in super slick silver, plus colour-blocked gilets and bumbags.
The Polo arm of the Ralph Lauren juggernaut has proved it’s not just about collared airtex shirts and their tiny polo players on the left pocket. In fact, it’s having a bit of fashion moment this year, thanks to its psychedelic tie-dyes.
Adwoa Aboah has worn the yellow-turquoise-fuchsia hoodie, while Gigi Hadid styled out the swirl-splattered T-shirt. But forget thetie-dyefor now. It’s all about Polo Sport this summer.
