While talk shifts to who will be dressing Melania Trump on her husband’s inauguration, many American designers have now come out to publicly applaud Michelle Obama.
Her stunning gowns, colourful cardigans and chic silhouttes made her a firm fashion favourite. As well as wearing high-end designers, she also shined the spotlight on affordable brands from J.Crew, H&M to Asos.
As her eight years in the White House comes to an end, WWD asked designers who have dressed the First Lady to write personal thank you notes to her; including Jason Wu, Joseph Altuzaara, Christian Siriano, Marchesa designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, Jenna Lyons and more.
Jason Wu, who designed Obama’s gown for one of her first public events as First Lady, the Inaugural Ball said:
‘Dear Michelle,
Thank you for your amazing support for not only me, but for every creative who dreams in this country. You inspire me and I am so proud to play a small part in your most extraordinary legacy,’ Wu wrote, a Taiwanese-born Canadian and first generation American. ‘I can proudly say that I’ve reached my American Dream.’
Joseph Altuzarra wrote: ‘Thank you Michelle for being such a wonderful role model & powerful advocate for ALL Americans. We will miss you.’
Prabal Gurung even signed off with a plee to Michelle to move into the Oval Office in 2020:
‘Thank you for your grace, poise, intellect & integrity. You leave us inspired,’ the Nepalese-American designer says. ‘Thank you for letting us be part of your history. See you in 4 years as our first female president.
