Why Michelle Obama Is The First Lady Of Fashion

Michelle Obama has been the most inspiring First Lady America has ever seen. Throughout Barack's two terms in office she has actively utilised the influential platform to encourage education and spread hope, in turn gaining immense popularity and respect.

She has been consistent in preaching the values of being kind, passionate and hard working, and has become a role model for younger generations. It is her unblemished reputation for making powerful, eloquent speeches and memorable public appearances that has made her a true icon for many, politically. But it is her exquisite style that has made her a favourite among us fashion lovers, too.

Her style mirrors her personality: poised, bold, vibrant and vivacious, and she has been dressed by every big name in fashion, from Ralph Lauren to Versace.

Public Engagements

Every time Michelle makes a speech, is interviewed or supports Barack, her style never flounders. Bright block colours and simple cuts pave the way for her sartorial success.

Michelle Wearing High Street Brands

In 2008 Michelle appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno wearing an outfit by J.Crew. When Leno asked her how much she had spent on her outfit - a mustard-coloured blouse, cardigan and skirt - assuming it had cost thousands, Michelle surprised him and the audience when she said, 'Actually, this is a J. Crew ensemble! Ladies, we know J. Crew - you can get some good stuff online!'

As well as J.Crew, Michelle has been known to wear pieces from H&M, including a £21 polka dot dress on The Today Show in 2011, proving that she can be frugal and still stylish.

Evening Wear

Michelle has proven that she knows how to dress from day to night. Her signature evening style is a bardot, strapless or one-shouldered dress with a full-length skirt.

For the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Phoenix Awards in 2016 Michelle wore a embellished strapless gown, and when presenting the Best Picture award at the Oscars in 2012 she wore a metallic embellished gown - both by designer Naeem Khan.

State Dinners

At every annual State Dinner Michelle looked divine and exuded class in a styish evening gown. For her first State Dinner with the Indian Prime Minister in 2009 Michelle wore an embellished dress by Indian-American designer Naeem Khan. In 2015 Michelle wowed in a black bardot-style Vera Wang fishtail dress, and in 2016 she rocked a gold sequined Versace gown, which, by the way, we can't get enough of.

Inauguration(s)

For both of Barack's Inaugural Balls - in 2009 and 2013 - Michelle looked poised in custom designer gowns. She wore Jason Wu at both occasions: a white one-shouldered floor-length gown for the first inaugural ball, and then in a similar red gown for the second.

Visiting the UK

Michelle and Barack have visited the UK countless times to visit Downing Street as well as (our sartorial favourites) the Duchess of Cambridge and the Queen. Despite the bad weather she always looks graceful and stylish - just like the Queen and Kate, naturally.
