At the 2022 Met Gala, some of the event's most reliably exciting dressers were sadly missing. There was no Rihanna. No Zendaya. No Lady Gaga. And where were the Olsens?!?!
But, in their place, a host of newcomers raring to go in some seriously major looks. Leaning into the theatrics of the evening were the Brit girls. Emma Corrin - who has yet to don a boring red carpet look - was leading the charge, collaborating with the brilliant Harry Lambert (who also styles Harry Styles, making up for his absence on the night) in a custom Miu Miu look (worn with Cartier jewellery) inspired by 19th century New York socialite Evander Berry Wall, who was dubbed the 'King of Dudes' thanks to his eccentric, foppish get ups.
Also toying with gender conventions was Jessie Buckley, who sported a fake moustache for the night. Styled by Rose Forde, she wore a pin-striped suit by Schiaparelli's Daniel Roseberry, AKA the designer starlets turn to when they want to do things a bit differently.
Other first timers making a splash included Bridgerton stars Nicola Coughlan, in feathered Richard Quinn, and Simone Ashley, in a Moschino ball skirt and spangled cropped tops. In Zendaya's absence, the Euphoria Howard sisters were there to rep on behalf of the small screen's most stylish show: Maude Apatow in Miu Miu flapper-style gown and Sydney Sweeney in Tory Burch, who has just signed her up as an ambassador for the brand.
Also making their debut on the 2022 red carpet? Lila Moss, attending with her mum, Kate; Jodi Turner-Smith in Gucci (we can't believe it's her first time, either); fashion darling Tommy Dorfman in latex Christopher Kane; Dove Cameron in avant garde Iris Von Herpen; and, filling the Timothée Chalamet-shaped hole on the night, Kodi Smit-McPhee in a red, white and blue Bottega Veneta look that was - 'a celebration of a true American classic' - leather jeans and opera gloves.
And, proving that you're never too old to make a debut, 76-year-old Priscilla Presley attended her first Met Gala (in Prada), posing alongside Austin Butler, who plays Elvis in the forthcoming Baz Luhrmann biopic.
