As she made a surprise appearance on America's Got Talent, Meghan Markle showed once again that she hasn’t lost her sense of sartorial diplomacy since stepping down from the royal family. Turning to one of her favourite labels, Markle wore simple beige and black-buttoned shirt by Victoria Beckham.
Beckham, in fact, appears to be something of a secret weapon for Markle. Less than two days ago she wore another blouse from the designer, this time a chestnut brown number, to unveil 2020 TIME 100, proving that since striking up a friendship with Beckham - their partners, reportedly, introduced them - she frequently turns to her clothes for important public events.
Take March’s Endeavour Fund Awards. It was one of the last appearances on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s calendar before they bid adieu to royal duties - and they certainly went out in style. The driving rain did nothing to dampen their arrival. In fact, it created one of the most iconic photographs of the year, with the combination of the flashbulbs, the precipitation and Markle’s turquoise sheath dress (a choice number from Beckham) creating what you might call a perfect storm. The resulting image was beamed around the world and became a definitive fashion moment overnight for Markle.
She also owns a chain-print dress of Beckham’s, which she wore with a chic pillbox hat to 2019’s Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, as well as a box-style handbag, a tailored navy coat and a pair of sleek knee-high boots, all of which she wore to her first Christmas Day church service as a member of the royal family.
It’s no surprise that she should fall back again and again on Beckham. The two, after all, are friends. Beckham has been vocal with her support in the past, telling Glamour: ‘I liked what Meghan Markle said at the Fashion Awards. That it used to be cool to be cruel, and now it’s cool to be kind. Kindness has always been at the core of girl power.’ And the two have a lot in common. They’re two of the most photographed and followed women in the world - super-influencer-powerhouses, if you like - and have both carved out successful second careers after retiring from pop stardom (Posh Spice) and acting (Markle).
There’s also another reason - Markle has always lent her support to women designers. Clare Waight Keller, Givenchy’s then-creative director, was the ‘chosen one’, designing what is surely one of the most famous wedding dresses of all time, not to mention many subsequent occasionwear outfits, for Markle. Her second wedding dress was by luxury sustainable designer Stella McCartney, another favourite, and she’s also fond of her sister-in-law’s go-to, Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton, turning to her for pin-sharp tuxedo suits.
With Netflix’s mega-deal in the pipeline, expect to see a lot more Markle + Beckham power couplings in the near future.
