The Secret Message Behind Meghan Markle’s Outfit On The Cover Of Time Magazine

It speaks volumes.

Meghan Markle doesn’t do things by halves. For her front cover of Time, Markle went for the ultimate trifecta: the power pose, the power hair and the power jumpsuit. As she and Prince Harry, who has been the subject of many internet questions containing the word ‘airbrush’, are fronting the issue that reveals this year’s Time 100, it makes sense that she would choose this moment to dress like an off-duty superhero.

Don’t forget, in her last public appearance (her first since giving birth to Lilibet), Markle also wore top-to-toe white to film a video for her 40th birthday with Melissa McCarthy. The Time cover was styled by sisters Nina and Clare Hallworth, who also look after Kirsten Dunst and Jennifer Aniston, who, in reverting once again to white, could have been borrowing from the Suffragettes. At 2019's State of the Union, Democratic congresswomen famously wore all-white outfits to make an overt statement of support for the continuing movement towards gender parity. One of their number was AOC, who has also chosen to wear white at crucial moments in her career, like when she was sworn into Congress, and at Monday's Met Gala.

As well as showing her implicit support for women, Markle could have been using the outfit as a way to metaphorically 'wipe the slate clean'. With a constant swirling of rumours about the state of the relationship between the royal family and the Sussexes, perhaps the colour, a symbol of purity and peacefulness, sends a message of new beginnings.

Inside the magazine, the couple can be seen walking through a sun-dappled forest, their clothes mirroring their surroundings almost exactly. Prince Harry is dressed in a dark green suit with a white shirt; Markle wears a forest green polo neck and a matching coat. Perhaps their outfits' 'at one with nature' credentials are a way of championing the environment, particularly at a time when hurricanes and flooding have served as prescient warnings about climate change?

Now, if you'll excuse us, we're off to analyse the fact that, like Ant and Dec, Prince Harry always seems to stand on the same side of Meghan Markle...
