While everyone on Instagram is spouting the need for a digital detox (irony intended), the world of couture fashion is finding every possible way to keep us attached to our phones. In fact, John Galliano brought iPhones to the catwalk for his AW18 Couture collection for Maison Margeila, literally strapping them to models ankles.
He’s known for his out-of-the-box thinking when it comes to footwear, but Galliano’s take on wearable technology is a new height for couture fashion. In what we can only assume was a move inspired by the great sat nav, the Paris show saw models walking with iPhone holsters attached to their legs and arms.
In Galliano’s own words, he wanted to explore the world of ‘neo-digital natives’. In a podcast that accompanied the show, The Memory Of…, he said:
‘The AW18 collection is my interpretation of nomads. We’re all nomads today, and we’re attached to our iPhones and our iPads, they’re everything, and we move in these tribes... I came up with this term, ‘neo-digital natives’, and this is a further exploration into that.’
Not content with keeping iPhones on our bodies in any way possible, the show also saw VR headsets strapped to models, and one of the heavily padded coats even had a TV screen on the back, streaming the entire show no less.
With couture fashion often considered very old-world glamour, this seems to be showing an intention to delve into the modern world while maintaining couture’s avant-garde allure. So, will you adopt the Margeila iPhone arm holster look for A/W? You may already have a dupe on your car dashboard...
