The world's preoccupation with absolutely anything worn by a female member of the royal family is, quite frankly, a little baffling. It would be foolish, however, to ignore the sheer spending power generated by – most notably – the Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex. Every outfit worn by both Kate and Meghan is hungrily scrutinised by the media and public alike, and if they wear something that hasn't been designed especially for them, it is guaranteed to sell out in seconds. As part of this, Meghan especially has been criticised for sartorial decisions she has made, with many suggesting she has broken royal etiquette. What, then, would these same naysayers think of Lady Amelia Windsor, who wore trainers on the red carpet this week?
Attending a party for the Royal Academy's summer exhibition, the young royal – and breakout star of the recent royal wedding – wore a lace-trimmed, silk-satin midi dress by Stella McCartney, teamed with a pair of the designer's Eclypse Pastel trainers. Unexpected? Sure. A triumphant success? You bet. With the recent furore in Japan, as women rallied against the rule that they have to wear heels to work, it's incredibly refreshing to see someone embracing comfort and function on the red carpet.
Incidentally, you can still buy Amelia's entire outfit, should you be one of the millions of people hooked on the female royals' every move. Even if you're not, Stella McCartney is one of fashion's few luxury brands committed to sustainability, and she never used any animal by-products in her designs. Also, the dress is designed to be worn multiple ways, which really does give new meaning to cost-per-wear.
