If you were active on Myspace, with an ironic profile name that suited your angsty mid-noughties persona, you probably went through an 'emo' phase, with a 'look' that consisted of an old band tee from a charity shop and lots of kohl eyeliner. Just as you were about to commit to the haircut - a severe fringe that permanently falls over one eye - things changed and, while the teenage angst didn't go away, the band tees and skinny jeans did.
Except, maybe it's time to dig them out - or at least resurrect the old look in a new way. And if there's one person who should be on your moodboard, it's Kourtney Kardashian. The woman is having what can only be described as an 'emo' moment in the wardrobe department - and (what can we say?) we're into it.
She sealed the deal at this year's MTV Awards. Arriving hand-in-hand with boyfriend Travis Barker, Kardashian wore a corseted leather minidress from Oliver Theyskens, paired with spaghetti-strapped sandals from Manolo Blahnik. She even nodded to the noughties with her hairstyle, pulling out two strands of hair either side of her parting (remember those?!), and looked exactly how we wanted to look in 2004.
Ever since then, Kardashian has stuck (almost religiously) to a wardrobe of black clothes and ever-so-slightly punk-rock shoes. Prada's stomper boots, Chanel's sheer black gloves, Gianvito Rossi's mesh pumps, Dolce & Gabbana's bustier top...It's like she's fallen down a 'sexy-emo' rabbit hole, with an undercurrent of goth.
If she does wear colour - a splash of green or orange, say, it's usually tempered with a skull-and-crossbones necklace (hers is from Marty Magic) or black mule sandals threaded with silver rings (Givenchy). As autumn turns to winter, and sunny days become few and far between, it's all very tempting, particularly with the approach of Halloween.
A couple of things to note since you were last on Myspace, according to Kardashian. The fringe is no longer mandatory. A black corset top, paired with flared black trousers, is the ultimate date outfit. And, finally, head-to-toe black has never looked better.
