For fans who were watching Kanye West's third listening party for Donda on Apple Music, there was quite a shock towards the end of the show. During the final song, No Child Left Behind, a ghostly figure emerged, walking slowly towards West. The live audience in Chicago let out screams of delight – the loudest of the entire night – as it became clear that this figure was, in fact, Kim Kardashian. In a wedding dress.
The white gown trailed behind her as she wore a veil over her face. And it looked remarkably familiar. It was actually the bridal look which closed Balenciaga's recent couture show – the show which marked thebrand's return to haute couture after a 53-year hiatus.
Khloe Kardashian and Kylie Jenner appeared to confirm Kim's appearance on Stories, posting close-up images of their sister standing next to her estranged husband. It was certainly a knowing nod to the audience, seeing as the couple's impending divorce has dominated headlines of late. But it's no surprise that Kim was the first to wear this piece of fashion history, given the close relationship West has with Balenciaga's creative director Demna Gvasalia.
Gvasalia directed the second listening party for Donda and West was one of the few guests invited to Balenciaga's couture show in June. The bridal finale was certainly one of the biggest talking points of the collection, particularly as the dress is based on a wedding gown designed by Cristobal Balenciaga in 1967.
Does this mean Kim and Kanye are getting back together? Probably not. But it was a great fashion stunt, nonetheless.
