Why Are All Of These Celebrities Wearing The Same Trench Coat?

It's a reliable fashion maxim that when you spot something three times, it's a trend. But when you spy the identical item of clothing on three bigger-than-the-A-Listers, well then that's a thing. Such is the case with a certain trench coat doing the rounds right now, as seen on Kate Moss, Jennifer Lopez and Madonna.

Of course, it is not just any trench coat but one from the Coach x Jean-Michel Basquiatcollection, which the American mega-brand showed on the AW20 runway at New York Fashion Week in February (an homage to the 1980s downtown creative scene, the show closed with a surprise performance from Debbie Harry). Cut for an oversized fit, the classic design (which, let’s be honest, is a perennial wardrobe hero) is updated for now with delightfully haphazard motifs taken from the work of the legendary 1980s artist.

Testament to the versatility of the trench, each women have worn theirs in a totally different way, chiming with their diverse sense of style. First out of the starting blocks was Moss, who wore hers with flat Western-style boots, skinny black pants and a quilted handbag. Lopez - who stars in the campaign for the new collection and who has recently designed a handbag for the brand - teamed hers with distressed denim and towering heels. Madonna, meanwhile, paired her trench with pink hair and 26-year old dancer boyfriend Ahlamalik Williams. All three wore theirs with sunglasses (pretty sure that is a legal requirement for bigger-than-the-A-listers).

Artist/fashion collaborations are always big news on the catwalk (this year alone, see: Dior Men and Amoako Boafo, Chloé and Rita Ackermann) and teaming up with the Basquiat estate was a stroke of genius from Coach. The artist’s work – which explored the themes of race, identity, power and money – continues to surprise, excite and provoke today. ‘Basquiat is one of my heroes,’ says creative director Stuart Vevers in a statement. ‘He embodied the creative, inclusive spirit of New York and was a force for change in his community. I am proud to celebrate his work and values and help bring them to a new generation. I’m also incredibly grateful for the support and trust given to me by Basquiat’s family, and would like to thank them for their help in creating this collection and campaign.’

If you’re not in the market for a trench, other pieces from the collection include bags, T-shirts and hoodies, also featuring the artist’s distinctive lines (the accompanying campaign stars Paloma Elsesser, as well as Basquiat’s niece Jessica Kelly, alongside JLO).

Best of all, the collection has the whole-hearted seal of approval from the late artist’s family. ‘We really love this collection from Coach,’ says sister Jeanine Basquiat, who attended the show in February. ‘They did a great job in capturing the spirit and energy of Jean-Michel’s work and putting together a perfect group of creative talent to bring this to life. We’ve always been fans of Coach, so this is a dream project for us.’ And this is a dream coat for us.
