And the winner is... Honestly, I don't know, it's too hard to choose, but one person who's definitely a front-runner is Jodie Turner-Smith. The Met Gala, after all, is an opportunity to not just dress up but dress up up. With this year's theme of Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, taking inspiration from the style legacy of the Black dandy, the evening was also an invitation to play with elements of dress usually associated with menswear.
It's fair to say: Turner-Smith understood the assignment, looking resplendent in an embossed leather coat that puffed at the shoulders, cinched at the waist, featured a bustle at the back and most definitely ticking off the event's dress code: 'Tailored for You'. The finishing touch was a top hat in the same burgundy shade and loafer-style boots.
The ensemble's designer was Daniel Lee, chief creative officer at Burberry, who accompanied the actor on the red carpet that was actually midnight blue and flecked with flowers. Her stylist, meanwhile, is one of the industry's hottest creative duos, Wayman Bannerman and Micah McDonald (otherwise known as Wayman + Micah).
The inspiration was Selina Lazevski, an equestrian in the 19th century. As Burberry's press release details, Lazevski was 'a Black Equestrian who lived during the Belle Époch in Paris and was photographed by Paul Nader in 1891. The coat’s cinched waist and bustle reference the Victorian silhouette captured in Lazevski’s portrait, switching traditional tailoring fabrics for leather embossed with an ornate floral design.'
The details of her outfit were exquisite on closer inspection, from the jaunty slant of the hat's curled brim across her left eyebrow to the fact that her shirt and trousers, worn underneath the coat, appear to be subtly imprinted with snakeskin (although it's actually florals). As one of the best red-carpet risk takers of the modern day - Turner-Smith was pioneering bump-baring pregnancy looks even before Rihanna - it's no surprise, really, that she might just be the best-dressed at the Met Gala. Jodie, I take my hat off to you.
