As soon as the green shoots of summer are in the air - barbecue smoke wafting through your open window, the dewy smell of mown grass in the morning - there's only one thing for it in the wardrobe department: a dress. Isabel Spearman, founder of the Daily Dress Edit, is something of an expert (as you might expect). For her latest virtual pop-up, available online at dailydressedit.com, Spearman has chosen not only to showcase slow fashion brands but those that can cater to a more inclusive range of sizes.
To prove this point, Spearman decided to shoot the pop-up's dresses - which are from 31 labels - on some of her customers. 'I really wanted to showcase how adaptable these brands can be with their dresses, offering a much broader size range and [the ability] to customise so easily,' she says. The feedback she's received has been overwhelmingly positive. 'I have been flooded with messages such as, "It is so nice to see someone that looks like me,” and “I can now see how that dress works with a bust!”.'
The reason these smaller brands can be so much more adaptable to the needs of their customers is that most of them make their dresses themselves or with a small in-house team. 'They can also customise lengths and features to make sure the customer has exactly the right dress for her,' explains Spearman, who gives an example from the brand Coco Conran, who recreated one of her best-selling dresses for a customer with smaller puff sleeves and a shorter hemline within two weeks. 'It's a brilliant example of how slow fashion can create a pretty much bespoke dress to fit any body shape,' says Spearman.
While she finds it difficult to pick favourites from the 31 - joking that it's like, 'choosing between my children', - Spearman has a few special mentions like Faith-Rowan Leeves ('Her Frankie style is a classic. I have three in my wardrobe as do my mother and sister, each of us completely different bodyshapes, ages and heights. Faith bends over backwards to create the perfect fit so your dress feels as easy to wear as possible') and Kindred of Ireland ('Using linen sourced locally to their studio in County Down, each dress made in the studio by a tiny team').
