If there's one brand that knows how to create mass hysteria with clothes, it's H&M. The high street mega-chain has become renowned for its designer collaborations, each year choosing a fashion house with which to work on an exclusive collection of pieces. Last year was the turn of Moschino and the year before that was Erdem. This year's designer? Giambattista Valli, he of the gargantuan tulle gowns worn by Brie Larsen, Lupita Nyong’o and Lily Collins on the red carpet.
And, after months of anticipation, you can finally shop it right here.
There was, of course, a show in Rome’s Palazzo Doria Pamphilj, a privately-owned house with walls cluttered with works by the Italian masters Caravaggio, Titian and Raphael. Kendall Jenner, the campaign star, opened the show in a pale version of the hot pink micro-dress she wore to announce the collab at the Cannes Film Festival in May. And yes, it is on sale with the rest of the collection.
There is also plenty of elevated streetwear to keep the high street shopper happy - the pearl-encrusted hoodie, sequinned track pants and leopard-print coats will fly into baskets - and a big helping of the kind of mega gown that Giambattista specialises in.
As the face of the collab, Jenner told Vogue: 'I’ve always been a really big fan of Giambattista Valli. I’ve worn a lot of his stuff on red carpets and we’ve created a relationship. I remember, I was trying on one of his dresses with my stylist for an event and we FaceTimed him to say hi and just show him the dress. He was like, “I really want you to come to Cannes with me. I have a surprise: I’m collaborating with H&M and I’d love for you to be a part of it.” Considering he and I had such a great relationship, it was an easy yes.'
Jenner's dress was actually amended especially for her by Valli. The one on sale is short, without a train – Jenner's train was created by stitching together other dresses. It went on sale shortly after the announcement back in May, along with several other pieces from the collection. This initial drop sold out in minutes, crashing the H&M website (no surprises there).
Some of the tulle dresses that sold out in the first offering arenow on eBay for £1,550, we'd say it's probably for the best that there's even more choice.
But frocks with serious flounce aren’t the only things to bookmark. There's also the hooded anorak (printed with a Renaissance painting on the reverse), the track pants covered in ‘gold leaf’, the red snake-effect trousers and the faux-fur leopard-print coat.
It might include anoraks and track pants, but make no mistake - there’s nothing casual about this collection. The jeans are high-waisted and tie-dyed, while the hoodies are sewn with dots of diamante. It’s unashamedly glamorous - the campaign images were shot by Mert and Marcus in the show space of Palazzo Doria Pamphilj - and reflects Valli’s couture ethos. Speaking to Vogue, he said: 'I’m not a designer who dresses someone to go to work — my community is very jetset. I love this idea of people being comfortable moving from one country to another; one culture to another.'
The prices, thankfully, also suit non-jetset pockets. A T-shirt is £24.99, while some of the more swoon-worthy gowns stretch to £299.99. Valli told_Vogue_: 'Yes, the designs are in a different fabric to what I normally use and will be sold at different prices, but everything has a meaning, down to the most simple sweatshirt.' It's affordable, yes, but is still signature Giambattista Valli. 'I don’t want the collaboration to be a parody. I’m a perfectionist; I want the collection to be totally faithful and honest to the customer.'
