Calling all brides to be: French Connection is the latest high street brand to branch out into bridalwear, with the label’s debut Spring 2018 wedding collection set to drop on 1st February 2018.
With a modern boho aesthetic, the collection features a range of diaphanous gowns for brides and bridesmaids, often boasting a painstaking attention to detail that belies French Connection’s affordability: prices start at just £65 for the pussybow ‘Comino’ shirt (which, paired with the lace ‘Arta’ trousers, £120, is a striking choice for the fashion-forward bride) and reaching up to £295 for the romantic Palmero dress, which appears to have stepped straight out of a Sofia Coppola mood board. Another option for an alternative bride is an elegant lace top and culottes co-ord, while the ‘Genoa’ dress, £195, with an embellished bodice and simple tulle-like skirt, does fairytale without the fuss.
‘Shoppers are able to buy affordable pieces in every other category except bridal, so it felt like a natural progression to launch a wedding capsule,’ French Connection’s design director Maria Chen told Vogue ahead of the launch. ‘With the growing trend of wedding dresses that don’t blow the budget, as well as brides wearing multiple outfits on the day, the idea was welcomed by our inner circle of brides to be.’
Bridesmaids, too, will certainly breathe a sigh of relief when faced with French Connection’s offerings. Each style features, according to the brand, ‘a unique decoration of its own, from the blush ‘Palma’ dress with beaded floral blossoms to bolder floral appliqué on the longer-sleeved ‘Christy’ dress, £250, and the ‘Genoa’ dress in a punchier sorbet pink hue.
Chen’s inspiration came courtesy of carefree celebrity brides: Kate Moss in bespoque John Galliano (cut on the bias to echo the Jazz Age styles favoured by Zelda Fitzgerald), Poppy Delevingne in custom Pucci and Bianca Jagger’s iconic YSL Le Smoking
