The72nd annual Emmy Awards were always going to be different. As we all adjust to life in an ongoing pandemic, Hollywood has been forced to adjust normal proceedings slightly, in this case staging a virtual ceremony which saw stars observing strict social-distancing laws, with Jimmy Kimmel hosting from an empty Staples Centre in LA. Some celebrities joined him there, while most of the winners accepted their awards from their very own sofas. But what did this mean for the fashion? Well, if anything, it was more creative than ever.
The absence of a traditional red carpet meant that actually, the A-list had much more freedom to create looks over which they had more control. Nobody had to worry about paparazzi shots, they all had control over their own image, with most posting their outfits to Instagram.
This meant that some chose the most sensational ballgowns they could find: Regina King wore blue Schiaparelli Couture, for instance, as she staged her own photoshoot for the occasion. Tracee Ellis Ross, meanwhile, wore gold Alexandre Vauthier with a face mask to match, which she wore on a red carpet of her own making.
Zendaya also delivered multiple looks throughout the night, ranging from an incredible Christopher John Rogers dress to a custom Giorgio Armani Privé cut-out gown, in which she accepted her award for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work in HBO's Euphoria, making her the youngest-ever recipient of that particular prize.
Sandra Oh, on the other hand, took the opportunity to prioritise comfort, although this didn't mean she looked any less amazing. The Killing Eve star wore a custom-made bomber jacket designed by LA-based brand KORELIMITED, which honoured both Oh's Korean heritage and the Black Lives Matter movement. Oh wore this with black trousers from L'Agence, as well as heels from Christian Louboutin, which she switched for Roger Vivier trainers.
As for Reese Witherspoon, she may have been wearing an LBD from Louis Vuitton from her garden but she revealed she was also sporting some fluffy pink slippers on her feet.

Reese Witherspoon in Louis Vuitton
To celebrate in her own garden, Reese wore a black dress by Louis Vuitton, which she revealed she paired with some pink fluffy slippers for extra comfort.
Regina King in Schiaparelli Couture
Regina King didn't do things by halves this year, despite the virtual nature of the ceremony. She staged her own photoshoot and looked utterly amazing in a blue embellished Schiaparelli Couture dress, which she wore with Stuart Weitzman heels.
Jameela Jamil in her PJs
Jameela Jamil did what we all hope the stars would do and actually wore her PJs to (virtually) attend the ceremony. But, as she wrote on Instagram referring to her character from The Good Place, 'I still did my make up and wore a sequin dressing gown, because... It's what Tahani would have wanted. And this is her day, not mine.'
Cynthia Erivo in Versace
Cynthia teamed her Versace mini dress with Tiffany & Co jewels and Jimmy Choo shoes.
Sandra Oh in KORELIMITED
Sandra Oh decided to use her Emmys look to make a powerful statement: her bomber jacket bore the words 'Black Lives Are Precious' in Korean, paying tribute to the Black Lives Matter movement and her own Korean heritage.
Tracee Ellis Ross in Alexandre Vauthier
Always a highlight of any red carpet, this year Tracee Ellis Ross made her own in her back garden. To walk down it, she wore a tiered, frilled gold gown by Alexandre Vauthier, which she wore with matching Jimmy Choo heels, vintage Tiffany & Co jewels and, of course, a gold face mask.
Uzo Aduba in a T-Shirt to honour Breonna Taylor
To accept her award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series, which she won for her role in Mrs. America, Uzo Aduba paid tribute to Breonna Taylor in this T-shirt bearing her name.
Kerry Washington in Oscar de la Renta
Kerry Washington wore not one but two looks for this year's Emmy Awards. The first was this beautiful, floral dress by Oscar de la Renta, which she wore with Monica Vinader earrings.
Kerry Washington in Dolce and Gabbana
For her second look of the night, Kerry wore a fringed Dolce and Gabbana dress with Chopard earrings.
Jennifer Aniston in Dior
Jennifer Aniston was one of the few celebrities to join host Jimmy Kimmel at the Staples Centre in LA. She wore a black, bias-cut gown for the occasion, which was another vintage Dior by John Galliano creation.
Rachel Brosnahan in her PJs
The star of The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel put a very fashionable spin on her pyjamas by wearing them with Roger Vivier shoes and Retrouvaì jewels. Her whole look will be up for auction in order to benefit the US organisation When We All Vote.
Yara Shahidi in Prada
Yara proved that you don't necessarily need a red carpet to wear a gown. Her Emmys dress was custom Prada with a feathered overlay and, as always, she looked spectacular.
Laverne Cox in Azzi & Osta
Before changing to present an award, Laverne wore this fuchsia gown by Azzi & Osta, which she paired with jewellery by Anabela Chan and shoes by Ruthie Davis.
Laverne Cox in Kim Kassas Couture
To present at the virtual awards, Laverne Cox wore a black jumpsuit by Kim Kassas Couture with jewels by Misahara.
Billy Porter in Ashi Studio
There's no way Billy Porter was going to let a pandemic get in the way of his red carpet drama. He may have been posing in his garden instead, but his custom-made Ashi Studio look made no less of an impact. It consisted of a tailored jacket with draped detail and flared trousers, which he wore with Rick Owens shoes, Lorraine Schwartz jewellery and an ear cuff by Alan Crocetti.
Julia Garner in Chanel
Julia Garner, star of Ozark, wore an elegant look by Chanel.
Issa Rae in Sergio Hudson
Issa Rae wore a custom-made Sergio Hudson gown with cut-out detail.
Regina King wears a Breonna Taylor T-Shirt
Like Uzo Aduba, Regina King paid tribute to Breonna Taylor by wearing a T-shirt designed to demand accountability for Taylor's murder by police in Louisville.
