Please be upstanding for the amazing Miss Emma Corrin. Virtually attending her first major awards ceremony last night, the 78th Golden Globe Awards, not only did she scoop the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series (Drama) award for her role as Princess Diana in season four ofThe Crown, but she was also one of the night’s best dressed.
Despite not being able to attend the Hollywood ceremony in person, Corrin still embraced the opportunity to dial up the drama. Collaborating with her stylist Harry Lambert (who also works with Harry Styles and fellow Golden Globe winner, Corrin’s friend and co-star, Josh O’Connor), the duo opted for a custom Miu Miu dress for the occasion.
In black velvet and with sculpted shoulders, the dress’s scene-stealing detail was the extravagant, oversized collar (note to self: this is how you do Zoom dressing). Corrin – who has become irresistible viewing off-screen as well as on, thanks to her fearless approach to fashion – was open about the inspiration for the look, posting a picture of a Pierrot clown (the ‘sad clown’ originated in the 17th-century as part of the Comédie-Italienne performance troupe) on her Instagram feed. The reference was completed thanks to the lone tear, drawn on with eyeliner; Cartier earrings were a nod to Hollywood high-glamour.
You could perhaps also read a subtle Diana reference, who Corrin credited in her speech as teaching her ‘compassion and empathy beyond any measure that I could ever imagine’, in the look. She, too, was a fan of the floppy statement collar.
She might have risen to fame during a year when red carpets have been gathering dust, but even this cannot dim the mega-watt charge of Corrin’s style. Miu Miu, whose SS21 campaign she appeared in, has quickly become one of Corrin’s go-to labels; she wore a checked tunic and matching leggings to The Crown premiere in November, as well as some equally statement-collared looks to the Venice Film Festival last September.
From a fashion perspective, what makes Corrin such a delight to watch is her invigoratingly fun approach to getting dressed. She has an innate confidence around clothes that means she never sways into safe, predictable, or obvious territory. Corrin doesn't take herself too seriously, she serves up major star power with a side of subversion, but in the process proves that playfulness and glamour aren’t mutually exclusive. The Golden Globes marks the beginning of awards season. This one will look like no other and, judging by her debut turn, Corrin will look like nobody else attending. We can’t wait to see what she wears next.
