She took home gold at last year's Met Gala, coming as a life-sized version of a cat (not just any cat but Choupette, Karl Lagerfeld's feline companion). And already making a play for the most memeable moment at this year's Met Gala, which has just kicked off at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is Doja Cat.
Now, before you actually make it to the Met Gala, anyone who's anyone will be photographed by the phalanx of snappers positioned outside The Mark Hotel, whose infamous scarlet doormat has long been a part-and-parcel of the whole experience.
In true main character style, Doja Cat emerged wearing nothing but a tiny bath towel wrapped around her body, another towel wrapped around her hair, a diamond collar necklace and, the pièce de résistance, mightily vertiginous heels made of Perspex. Adding to what was already quite a look, the singer's mascara was left to run down either cheek, giving the impression that she'd perhaps been caught short in a fire drill and had no choice but to hot foot it from the shower.
Knowing Doja Cat, however, this was all part of the night's theatricality, a mere warm-up act for the red (or cream) carpet. And as it turns out, the running mascara was a very good clue as to what she would eventually wear: a wet T-shirt. Clinging to her skin and held in place by strategically placed hands, Doja Cat's one of the few people who could pull off such a spectacle and make it 'fashion' at the industry's equivalent of the Academy Awards. We're in awe. Again.
