You can tell a lot about a person from their clothes. For example, Daisy Edgar-Jones is interested in horses. How, pray tell, do we know that? Well, because she’s a fan of Hades - no, not the god of the underworld, but the cult British knitwear brand. In particular, she's a fan of the Carrington cardigan. (P.S. It's still available in all sizes so gallop, don't walk.)
Edgar-Jones wore the knitted piece over the weekend - proclaiming, ‘It’s cardigan weather folks!’ - and you can clearly see that the buttons look like they’re shards of ancient pottery. Actually, they’re tiny models of horses. The Carrington comes in another variation, worn by Aisling Bea, where the heads of god and goddesses form the fastenings (Aphrodite, Medusa, Athena and Zeus got the call up). Elegant and erudite, no?
Founded in 2015, Hades uses pure lambswool and makes its knitted goods in Hawick, Scotland. It became famous, among fashion editors who long ago fell for slogan sweaters such as Bella Freud’s ‘Ginsberg Is God’, for its colour-blocked alphabet jumpers, with pleasing combinations like beige and lilac (R) and pale pink and forest green (T). Like Freud, Hades knows how to do a slogan right, with mantras such as ‘Joy Division’ and ‘X-Ray Spex’ adding some much-needed distraction on video calls. Pair one of its knits with some jazzy earrings - Edgar-Jones’s favourite come from Completedworks - and you’re ready to face autumn.
