Gabriela Hearst And Kerby Jean-Raymond Triumph At CFDA Fashion Awards

After the annual Met Gala, the CFDA Fashion Awards is the most glamorous event on the industry's calendar. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing pandemic, the ceremony was indefinitely postponed from early June. Now the results have been released via video (quelle surprise) - and they’ve brought a smile to the face of an industry that has been rocked by this year’s events.

Gabriela Hearst and Pyer Moss’s Kerby Jean-Raymond scooped the womenswear and menswear designer of the year awards, with Telfar Clemens winning for accessories designer of the year and Christoper John Rogers for emerging designer of the year. In each case, this is their first CFDA Award, but none of the results are surprising. Hearst has worn praise for her wide-reaching sustainable practices, while Jean-Raymond, who set up an emergency fund for small businesses impacted by coronavirus and turned Pyer Moss HQ into a face mask and latex glove donation centre, has just announced an innovation platform in partnership with Kering.

Clemens’s Shopping Tote, the so-called ‘Bushwick Birkin’, makes him the only viable choice for accessories, while that Lady Gaga moment at the VMAs, where she swept onstage wearing Rogers’s emerald green gown, was the kind of pure fashion fantasy we’ve been sorely missing in 2020.

International women’s designer of the year went to Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli, while international men’s designer went to Dior’s Kim Jones, the man who is soon to become one of fashion’s busiest after his recent arrival as artistic director of women’s ready-to-wear and couture at Fendi (Karl Lagerfeld’s old gig).

The nominees are decided by CFDA Awards Guild, comprised of fashion journalists, stylists and retail executives. Watch the video - and congratulations to the six designers.
