Carrie Bradshaw changed the game of fashion in the late ‘90s. Putting Manolo Blahnik’s on the map? Making newspaper dresses look cool? There were many sartorial highs (and lows) over the show’s six seasons, that are still heavily referenced today. Just check out the Instagram account archiving every single Sex and the City outfit ever worn – with 286K followers and counting.

But for those who can only dream of Carrie Bradshaw’s designer wardrobe, be safe in the knowledge that back in the early days of the hit TV show, it was all about the bargain buy. That white tutu SJP wore in the opening credits in 1998? It cost a mere $5. Yes - that’s £4, people!

The show’s costume designer, Patricia Field (who has created costumes for Ugly Betty and the Devil Wears Prada, too), recently revealed the stylist secret when chatting to New York Fashion Week founder Fern Mallis - stating she found the two-tiered tulle skirt in a showroom bin.

Although the show’s creator, Darren Star, needed some convincing. ‘People had reservations about the tutu in the opening sequence,’ Sarah Jessica Parker told EW in a 2003 interview. But said Field and her ‘stuck to [their] guns.’ And so a fashion classic was born.

SATC fans will also be pleased to note you can buy a piece of the Carrie Bradshaw magic. Field has recreated the ballerina-esque piece, which she sells on her website - for $140 [£115] though, not five dollars, sadly.

Hmm, shopping this weekend? You may want to rummage your nearest vintage shop. Oh, and don’t forget to buy a pastel pink vest while you're at it too. '90s Carrie would be proud.
