You might not know Angelica Hicks by name (yet), but you’ll certainly recognise her witty designs. The 23-year-old illustrator is a social media success story, discovered on Instagram thanks to her ‘sartorial satires,’ pun-based pictures that celebrate the fun side of fashion.
Since catching the industry’s attention with her cartoonish portraits and sense of humour, Angelica has worked with brands like Tory Burch and magazines like Porter and US Elle. Speaking to online lifestyle platform Semaine, Hicks claims that humour is the key to her work, saying ‘I always thought the coolest compliment was to be called funny by someone.’
Describing her distinctive style, Angelica says ‘It’s almost as though the drawing is secondary to the text. I try to look at fashion and popular culture in a very simple way. My post about Anna Wintour as ‘Band-Anna,’ ‘Alexander Fang’ or ‘Derek Blas-Burger’ are so simple and easy but you never think about that. I guess I take things very literally. I play on the literal meaning of the words.’
To celebrate fashion month in all its glory, Angelica has teamed up with Semaine to create an exclusive animated video, telling the story of Insta-famous influencer 'H-It Girl', who is sabotaged by jealous fashionista 'Editor at Large'. Along the way, she meets a cast of characters inspired by fashion industry stereotypes.
