There is no trend that makes women run a mile more than cycling shorts. However, with our obsession with reinventing the 80s aesthetic showing no signs of slowing down, it seems we can no longer argue that this marmite item is well and truly back.

We have, in part, Kim Kardashian to blame. She kicked off their resurgence when she styled black lycra shorts with a corset, fluffy slides and an oversized varsity jacket last year. A slew of celebrities shortly jumped on the bandwagon, including Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid, and simultaneously they were given the high fashion seal of approval when they were spotted on the catwalks at Alexander Wang, Chanel Cruise and MSGM.

Until this point we had dismissed this trend as only suitable for those with a wardrobe like Kim (or legs like Kendall), but a new picture of Hailey Baldwin made us think that maybe, just maybe, this might be a look appropriate for us.

The shorts in question were a tailored leather pair. Offering both a more flattering silhouette and a more forgiving material than the classic lycra cycling shorts, we can imagine that if you styled these right the could actually be quite wearable.

While Baldwin went for a grungy vibe by pairing hers with a matching leather jacket, bandeau and gold hoops, you could easily dress them down with a silk shirt or striped knit.

After all, if it was good enough for Princess Diana, it's good enough for us.
